MADRID — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Saturday that torrential rains had caused “severe damage” across parts of the country, with one person killed as flash floods swept through several areas.

“The torrential and persistent rains of the last few hours have caused severe damage in many areas of our region. This night has been especially tough in Madrigueras (Albacete),” Sanchez said on X.

The prime minister said the government was closely monitoring the situation and urged residents to exercise caution and follow instructions issued through official emergency channels.

“All my affection to the family of the woman who has passed away due to the flooding, and all our support and solidarity to the affected neighbors,” he said.

His remarks came as weather warnings remained in place for eastern Spain, where further torrential rain and potentially damaging flooding were forecast over the coming days as cold air at higher altitudes moved over warmer air.

Media reports said Friday that one person had died and 90 others were rescued from flash floods as vehicles were swept away and homes inundated across south-central and eastern parts of the country.
