RIYADH — Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states have unanimously endorsed the United Arab Emirates’ nomination of Minister of State Lana Zaki Nusseibeh for the position of United Nations secretary-general, GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi announced Thursday.

Albudaiwi said the unanimous support reflects the GCC countries’ commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and reinforcing the United Nations’ role in maintaining international peace and security in accordance with the principles and objectives of its Charter.

He emphasized the Gulf states’ determination to contribute to international efforts aimed at promoting peace, security and cooperation through the UN system.

Albudaiwi praised Nusseibeh’s distinguished diplomatic career and extensive experience in international affairs, particularly her work within the United Nations.

Nusseibeh served as the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2013 to 2024 and twice presided over the UN Security Council during the UAE’s 2022–2023 membership.

She also served as Vice President of the UN General Assembly and President of the Executive Board of UN Women.

Albudaiwi expressed confidence that her diplomatic expertise and professional qualifications would contribute to strengthening the UN’s effectiveness and international standing.

He concluded by wishing Nusseibeh success in her candidacy for the organization’s top leadership position.
