ADEN — The Yemeni army said Saturday that government forces had recaptured several strategic positions from the Houthis in Taiz and Al-Hudaydah provinces as fighting intensified across western Yemen.
Government forces “achieved battlefield victories on the Haifan front” along the administrative border between Taiz and Lahj provinces, the army’s September Net news outlet reported.
Citing a military source, the report said clashes across several fronts in Taiz and along the western coast killed and wounded dozens of Houthi fighters and destroyed dozens of vehicles belonging to the group.
Fighting remained underway across the Taiz and western coastal fronts, the source added.
The army also said its forces thwarted a Houthi infiltration attempt in the Al-Qasr area east of Taiz city.
Clashes subsequently resumed around the city’s eastern entrance, while a series of explosions were heard in the area.
The army said its aircraft carried out 15 airstrikes against Houthi positions in Taiz and Al-Hudaydah on Friday.
Separately, the government-aligned National Resistance Forces said they destroyed two explosives-laden Houthi boats off the Al-Hudaydah coast.
The forces said the boats had attempted to target the Al-Fajrah area south of Al-Khokha and the port of Mocha. They provided no further details.
The National Resistance Forces also announced the start of a counteroffensive against the Houthis on the southern Al-Jarahi front in Al-Hudaydah.
The latest fighting is part of a series of reciprocal attacks that began in July, ending a period of relative calm that had prevailed across Yemen’s front lines since 2022.
The Houthis have controlled the capital Sanaa and several other cities since September 2014, while Yemen’s internationally recognized government and allied forces control large areas of the country’s south, east and west.
