SK Group recently entered into agreements with Vietnamese partners to build data centres and develop the country’s AI ecosystem. A move that is certain to expand the company’s AI strategy internationally.

Through subsidiaries SK Telekom and SK Innovation, the conglomerate struck memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with the Vietnam’s National Innovation Center (NIC) and the Nghe An Provincial government.

The deals cover the potential buildout of an AI data centre project in Nghe An, Vietnam’s largest province located on the northern coast. SK Innovation will first assess feasibility around the facility’s energy supply, potentially exploring a link to the Quynh Lap LNG power project, a 1500-megawatt power plant under development by an SK Innovation-led consortium.

SK Telecom will review options to develop and operate the facility, while seeking to generate global interest. The Nghe An government committed to discussing support measures including permits, administrative processes and incentive programmes, the company said.

Meanwhile, the agreement with the NIC will focus on developing Vietnam’s wider AI industry through energy infrastructure, data centres and the development of policy and regulatory frameworks.

Under the deal, SK Telecom will focus on AI growth through fostering collaboration and investments, while SK Innovation will deliver energy solutions.

SK Group said the deals mark the “first overseas expansion” of the group’s AI full-stack strategy spanning semiconductors, data centres, AI services and energy assets, with the South Korean player aiming to transform into an “AI full-stack provider”.

SK Telecom CEO Jung Jai-hun stated: “AI data centres are key infrastructure that underpins the growth of the AI industry,” adding the company will “refine a collaboration model tailored to the Vietnamese market”.
