RIYADH — The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) announced that its laboratories have enhanced readiness for the Hajj season through 24/7 operations and advanced technologies aimed at ensuring the highest standards of safety and quality for pilgrims.

SFDA laboratories receive and analyze samples submitted by field inspection teams and conduct urgent testing to help safeguard pilgrims. The laboratories also support epidemiological investigations into suspected food poisoning cases and monitor operational performance indicators.

According to current metrics, laboratories processed 857 samples and completed 1,856 tests from 465 requests during the season, reflecting rapid response capabilities and high operational efficiency.

The SFDA implemented a “Fast Track Mechanism,” allowing samples to be received, sorted, and analyzed within one hour of arrival to enable immediate preventive action during emergencies.

The authority utilizes advanced laboratory technologies, including genomic analysis systems to identify pathogens and trace infection sources, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) devices for rapid microbial detection, and ELISA systems for detecting toxins and foodborne pathogens.

Beyond diagnostic testing, the SFDA is also conducting specialized research in cooperation with relevant entities, including safety evaluations and analyses of ready-made meals served to pilgrims to strengthen food safety standards during Hajj.

The authority said all laboratory operations adhere to the highest standards of quality and biosafety while relying on data analysis and coordination with relevant entities to support decision-making and protect pilgrim health and safety throughout the season.
