RAFHA — Seven red-necked ostrich chicks hatched in the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve during the second quarter of 2026, marking progress in the species’ reintroduction program.
The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve Development Authority said the successful hatching demonstrates the species’ ability to adapt and reproduce in its natural habitat.
As an important indicator of the program’s progress, the breeding of red-necked ostriches in the wild shows that the species has moved beyond the release and adaptation stages to forming populations capable of completing their life cycle, reproducing and growing in their natural environment.
The authority said the development also demonstrates the suitability of the reserve’s natural habitats and the effectiveness of its protection and field-monitoring efforts.
Its approach to wildlife reintroduction includes studying, preparing and protecting habitats, selecting suitable release sites, conducting field monitoring, and tracking the movement, adaptation, reproduction and distribution of reintroduced species.
The return and successful breeding of the red-necked ostrich form part of wider efforts to restore wildlife by returning species to their natural ranges, increasing their populations and creating environments that support them.
The initiative aims to enhance wildlife diversity and distribution, strengthen connections between species and their habitats, and support natural balance and ecosystem stability.
The authority continues to implement programs to protect wildlife, reintroduce species and conserve their habitats as part of efforts to ensure the sustainable and effective management of natural resources.
