Multiple explosions reported across southern Iran’s coastal areas

DUBAI — Multiple explosions were heard early Thursday in coastal areas of southern Iran, including Sirik, Minab and Qeshm Island, according to Iranian media.

According to state broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), sounds of several explosions were reported along the coastal areas of Sirik and Minab County.

The official IRNA news agency said several areas in Sirik were hit by “hostile projectiles,” without providing further details.

Fars News Agency reported explosions in Sirik, Minab and on Qeshm Island, citing local authorities as saying the sounds came from the direction of the sea.

On Wednesday, Fars reported that an explosion from the sea had been heard in southern parts of the Iranian city of Jask.

The reports came amid heightened tensions between Iran and the US over the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides also trading accusations over regional instability.

US President Donald Trump asserted on Wednesday that the war with Iran will end “immediately” after the upcoming US midterm elections, accusing Tehran of holding out in hopes that a change in political power in Washington will allow it to pursue a nuclear weapon.

Speaking to reporters before departing for a Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, Trump argued that Tehran is attempting to influence American voters to secure a more lenient administration in Washington.

“I think the war will end immediately after the election…They’re desperate to try and affect the election so that we could get a nice, weak group of people in there and leave them alone and let them have their nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
