Google recently released a standalone Gemini app for macOS which can be launched via a keyboard shortcut. This development has made the company’s proprietary AI assistant easier to access on Macs.

Gemini is available globally as a free download. Once it is installed, it can be accessed with an Option-Space keyboard shortcut without the need to switch tabs.

Along with routine AI tasks such as writing emails, drafting reports and planning vacations, the assistant can analyse what users are looking at on their Mac screens, including files and other applications which are open.

Users can also generate images with Nano Banana or videos with Veo to bring an idea to life, according to a blog. The app is available to all Gemini users on macOS versions 15 and up.

“We’re starting today with an app that brings AI assistance right where your work happens, but this first release is just the beginning”, Google’s Michael Friedman, Group Product Manager for the Gemini app, wrote in the blog post. “We’re building the foundation for a truly personal, proactive and powerful desktop assistant, with more news to share in the coming months”.

In January 2026, Apple entered into a multiyear deal to use Gemini AI models across its devices and for a major Siri upgrade later this year.
