RIYADH — Karim Benzema delivered a hat-trick and an assist as Al Hilal thrashed Al Kholood 6-0 to stay firmly in the Roshn Saudi League title race.

The emphatic victory saw Al Hilal cut the gap to leaders Al Nassr to two points, although they have played a game more, as the 2023-24 champions continue their push for another league crown.

Benzema, who has been in standout form since his winter arrival, registered his second hat-trick with the club and third of the season, underlining his growing influence in Simone Inzaghi’s side.

“There were seven finals; now there are six finals left,” Benzema said. “Each game is very important, but it’s better to focus on ourselves rather than other teams.

“Many things can happen in football, and we will fight until the end.”

The French forward has now scored eight goals and provided two assists in just six league appearances since joining Al Hilal, taking his overall tally to 16 goals in 20 matches this season.

“I feel good,” Benzema added. “I’m always ready to help my teammates by scoring goals, but the work of the whole team today was important.

“We were focused on the championship. The game is over; now we rest well because another game is coming.”

Elsewhere, Al Ahli missed the chance to close the gap at the top after a 1-1 draw away to Al Fayha.

Ivan Toney opened the scoring for Al Ahli with his 27th league goal of the season to move ahead in the Golden Boot race, but Jason equalized early in the second half as Al Ahli dropped points for the second time in three matches.
