RIYADH — The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has warned against abruptly stopping certain medications, saying doing so may trigger withdrawal symptoms in patients whose bodies have become accustomed to long-term treatment.

The authority urged patients to consult a physician before discontinuing any prescribed medication, noting that some drugs require gradual dose reduction under medical supervision.

The SFDA said medications commonly associated with withdrawal symptoms when stopped suddenly include antidepressants, anti-seizure drugs, sedatives and sleeping pills, certain painkillers, beta blockers, corticosteroid-containing medicines and antipsychotic drugs.

According to the authority, withdrawal symptoms may include headaches, dizziness or loss of balance, anxiety or irritability, fatigue or general weakness, sleep disturbances, tremors and changes in appetite.

The SFDA emphasized that patients should not stop taking any medication without consulting a doctor or pharmacist to help avoid potential health complications and ensure safe treatment.
