Ghassan Azzi, Sales Director, Middle & Africa at Sandisk, on the company’s enterprise storage push, the thinking behind the new SANDISK Optimus Internal SSD range, and why he believes flash is the foundation of tomorrow’s data-driven economy.

Dubai — The UAE’s push to become a digital-first nation is reshaping how organisations think about data. Investments in data centres, cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence are accelerating, and the storage layer underpinning all of it is moving into sharper focus.

Sandisk has operated in the Middle East for more than 25 years, building a reputation across both consumer and enterprise markets. The company is now sharpening its enterprise storage play while expanding its consumer SSD line-up with the newly launched Optimus range.

Ghassan Azzi, Sales Director for Middle East & Africa at Sandisk, shares insights on the company’s role in the UAE’s digital transformation, the thinking behind the Optimus brand, and why he believes enterprise SSDs are becoming a significant enabler of digital transformation across organisations in the UAE.

    Interview excerpts

The UAE is positioning itself as a digital-first nation. How do you see this journey evolving, and what role will Sandisk play in supporting the country’s vision?
The UAE has made its ambitions very clear through major investments in data centres, digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence. These initiatives demonstrate the country’s determination to be among the first globally to adopt emerging technologies. At Sandisk, we are committed to being part of this transformation. We continue to invest significantly in our enterprise business and storage technologies, enabling organisations to support the growing demands of AI, digital services, and data-driven innovation.

With consumers increasingly relying on SSDs for gaming and content creation, how does Sandisk’s SSD portfolio address the demand for faster and more reliable performance?
Earlier this year, Sandisk announced two big launches across both its internal & external SSD portfolios. We started with our Optimus internal SSD range, which is designed to serve everyone from casual gamers to professional gaming enthusiasts and content creators. Through Optimus, we support AI-driven workflows for creators by providing the speeds and capacities necessary for 4K/8K video and Big Data files. This was then followed by the announcement of our next-generation portable SSD portfolio, which included a three-tier lineup designed to support larger file sizes, AI content, and the increasingly demanding digital workflows of everyday users, creators, and professionals. The portfolio includes the SANDISK® Portable SSD, SANDISK Extreme® Portable SSD, and SANDISK Extreme PRO® Portable SSD.

What are the most important factors consumers should consider when choosing an SSD or storage solution?
Consumers should first understand the purpose for which they are purchasing a storage product. A common challenge is that users sometimes buy a product that is not suited to their device or application, leading to performance issues. Education is therefore essential. Whether it is a professional camera, gaming system or everyday device, the storage solution must match the performance requirements of the host device. SanDisk works closely with retailers, channel partners and consumers to ensure customers select the right storage product for their specific needs. And finally, and most importantly, consumers should buy from trusted channels to ensure you’re purchasing genuine products.

How is Sandisk adapting its SSD innovations to meet the evolving storage requirements of consumers across the GCC?
Innovation has always been central to Sandisk’s strategy. We are committed to keeping pace with the explosion in data consumption and are focused on markets witnessing rapid digital growth. Therefore, we provide flash-based data storage that prioritizes speed, reliability, and energy efficiency — for your home, studio, data center, and more. We do not have a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, our diverse storage solutions across both our internal and external SSD product ranges, cater to the different storage needs of our consumers.

Is it difficult to persuade customers to move away from traditional storage approaches and embrace newer technologies?
Not particularly. The rapid spread of information through social media and digital platforms means consumers are more informed than ever before. Adoption cycles have become significantly faster, and customers are often aware of new products even before they reach retail shelves. In many cases, consumers themselves provide valuable feedback that helps shape future innovations.

“Having operated in the Middle East for more than 25 years, Sandisk remains a trusted and familiar brand that customers naturally turn to when seeking reliable storage solutions.”

What inspired the introduction of the Optimus brand, and how does it reflect Sandisk’s future vision for storage solutions?
SANDISK Optimus™ represents the company’s new legacy in high-performance SSD. It has been developed to cater to a broad range of users, from everyday consumers to gaming enthusiasts and high-performance professionals and content creators. The new portfolio offers a simpler choice for the right storage based on use, with options ranging from value driven to the highest-performing available, and hence is divided into three distinct cateogies:

    • SANDISK Optimus ™: The ideal choice for creators, balancing high speed with cost-effectiveness.
    • SanDisk Optimus GX: Designed specifically for gamers, focusing on ultra-fast loading and power efficiency.
    • SanDisk Optimus GX PRO: The pinnacle of storage performance for developers, professionals, and gamers building AI PCs, workstations, or high-end systems.

How will the Optimus brand help strengthen consumer engagement and differentiate Sandisk in an increasingly competitive market?
Before Optimus, there was the Sandisk name that was at the forefront of innovation,  Consumers trust the brand because of our long-standing commitment to quality, reliability and innovation. Beyond the technology, we invest heavily in education, training programmes, partner engagement and marketing initiatives that help consumers understand the benefits of our products. This combination of strong brand recognition, advanced technology and customer education continues to set us apart in a highly competitive market.

What advice would you give organisations in the UAE looking to build smarter storage infrastructures?
Whether you’re a large enterprise or a small business, Sandisk enterprise SSDs are built for demanding workloads and applications. Today, our data-driven economy demands faster, more reliable access to data, and with SSD technology, Sandisk can help drive complex, high-capacity workloads and applications. Powered by NVMe, our enterprise solid state drives (eSSDs) can help accelerate data center workloads, achieve maximum throughput, and transform your data into actionable insights for your whole team.

Any final thoughts on SanDisk’s role in supporting the UAE’s digital transformation journey?
The UAE is creating one of the world’s most ambitious digital ecosystems, underpinned by investments in AI, cloud infrastructure and advanced data centres. Sandisk is committed to supporting this vision through continuous innovation in storage technologies, strategic investments in the enterprise market and solutions that enable organisations to unlock the full value of their data. As the nation accelerates its digital transformation agenda, we look forward to playing a key role in helping businesses and consumers store, access and manage data more efficiently and securely.
