ARLINGTON, Texas — Egypt defender Mohamed Hany became the first player in FIFA World Cup history to score two own goals in a single tournament during Friday’s Round-of-32 clash against Australia.

Hany inadvertently headed Aiden O’Neill’s free kick into his own net in the 55th minute, leveling the match at 1-1 after Egypt had taken an early lead.

The own goal came just minutes after the defender received lengthy medical treatment following a collision with Australia’s Connor Metcalfe while contesting an aerial ball. Concerned teammates immediately called for medical assistance, and Hany was assessed on the pitch for several minutes before being allowed to continue. A stretcher was brought to the sideline but was ultimately not needed.

The Al Ahly defender had also scored an own goal during Egypt’s 1-1 draw with Belgium in the group stage, making him the first player to register two own goals in the same World Cup.

Despite the unfortunate record, Egypt went on to defeat Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 following extra time, securing a historic place in the Round of 16.
