MILAN — Ronaldinho has made a stunning return to football at the age of 46 after agreeing to join Italian third-tier side Ravenna FC, more than a decade after his last professional appearance.

The Brazilian icon, who retired from professional football in 2015, was announced by the Serie C club on Saturday and is expected to be officially unveiled next week.

While Ronaldinho’s exact role at the club remains unclear, the former Barcelona and AC Milan star hinted that he intends to return to the pitch.

“New colours, same smile,” Ronaldinho said.

“I can’t wait to get back to dancing on the ball and write a new story together with Ignazio and the entire Cipriani family.

“Football has always been a source of joy for me, and I want to bring that same spirit to Ravenna.”

The move would mark Ronaldinho’s first professional involvement since ending his playing career 11 years ago following his final spell with Brazilian club Fluminense.

Questions remain over how active the former Brazil international will be on the field, with skepticism surrounding whether he will feature regularly in competitive matches.

Ravenna compete in Italy’s third division and play their home matches at Stadio Bruno Benelli in the northern Italian city of Ravenna.

Ronaldinho remains one of the most celebrated footballers of his generation.

The former attacking midfielder won the 2002 FIFA World Cup with Brazil and enjoyed trophy-laden spells with Barcelona and AC Milan. During his time in Spain, he won two La Liga titles and the UEFA Champions League, while also lifting the Serie A title in Italy.

The 2005 Ballon d’Or winner was recently seen supporting Brazil during their World Cup campaign, attending the team’s victory against Haiti as the five-time champions pursue another global title.

Should he make a competitive appearance for Ravenna, Ronaldinho would become one of the oldest former Ballon d’Or winners to return to professional football.
