MADRID — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Saturday that the Nov. 29 general elections would send a clear message that Spain is governed from within the country, not by foreign powers, as he pledged to resist the influence of the international far right.

Speaking at a campaign event in Tarragona, Sanchez defended his government’s foreign policy positions, including its opposition to the war in Iran and its rejection of increased military spending.

“On November 29, we will tell them with our votes that Spain is governed from Spain, not from Washington, not from Tel Aviv, not from Buenos Aires, not from Moscow, but from Spain,” Sanchez said.

“We will not allow our country to become the outpost or backyard of the international far right,” he added.

The Spanish premier reiterated his government’s opposition to the war in Iran and what he described as genocide in Gaza, while reaffirming Spain’s support for Palestinian statehood and peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine.

Sanchez also defended his refusal to meet US President Donald Trump’s demand for NATO members to allocate 5% of their gross domestic product to defense spending.

He said Spain would continue prioritizing public services and social welfare, including education, health care, social care and pensions, rather than increasing military expenditure to the level demanded by Washington.

The prime minister pledged to continue confronting the far right, describing Spain as a “beacon” that would continue inspiring people around the world.
